The present study is the development of Hydrodynamically Balanced Systems (HBS) of Levodropropizine, an antitussive agent, which are designed to increase the gastric residence time, thus prolonging the drug release. Levodropropizine HBS were prepared by using various viscosity grades of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (K4M, K15M, K100M) by Direct compression technique. The prepared HBS tablets were evaluated for various physical characteristics and optimized formulation was identified. Formulation F3 prepared with HPMC K4M showed results by releasing 97.14 ± SD of drug in 24 h in a controlled manner with a floating lag time of 4 sec and total floating time of 24 h has been considered as an optimized formulation. Regression analysis of drug dissolution profiles on the basis of Higuchi and Korsmeyer model, indicated that diffusion is the predominant mechanism controlling the drug release.
